S of Bismark, North DakotaOctober 1957
Summary
On October 25, 1957, a witness south of Bismarck, North Dakota, reported one object in the sky. The witness was a civilian ground observer. The sighting was a ground visual observation that lasted about 20 minutes around 6:15 p.m. local time.
The object was pencil shaped and red. It looked about the size of a basketball. It moved fast and climbed slowly toward the south. Witnesses said it had a flame coming from one end, like a gas flare, and that it turned black before it disappeared. The sky had scattered clouds with light winds.
This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the object was a balloon. Officers noted the Bismarck weather station launched a balloon at about the same time, which they believed accounted for the sighting.
