Summary

On October 5, 1961, an observer about two miles south of Roswell, New Mexico, reported a bright object at about 7:52 p.m. local time (0152 Zulu). The witness was a military command pilot whose reliability was rated excellent. The object looked like a fireball entering the atmosphere, about the size of a golf ball at arm's length. It was blue and white with red and green, like burning metal. One object was seen, with a tail longer than the object. It was at about 45 to 50 degrees elevation and followed an arc like the curve of the Earth. It disappeared as if a light was turned off. The sighting lasted about 10 seconds. The sky was clear with excellent visibility and no moon. The Air Force listed the case as astronomical, probably a meteor.
