Richey, MontanaMay 1959
Summary
In May 1959, someone near Richey, Montana reported finding strips of shiny material in a field that resembled aluminum. The material was forwarded to the U.S. Air Force for analysis.
The Air Force examined the sample and determined it was chaff, a radar-disrupting material that military aircraft drop during practice missions. In a letter dated June 24, 1959, Major Lawrence J. Tacker of the Air Force's Public Information Division explained the findings to the reporter. The chaff had been dropped by U.S. planes conducting a routine training exercise, the Air Force concluded.
