Project Blue Book Case File
Poughkeepsie, New YorkAugust 1962
Summary
On August 25, 1962, a civilian about three miles north of Poughkeepsie, New York, reported an object in the night sky. The time was about 2140 (9:40 p.m.) local time. The witness was near where Routes 44 and 55 intersect. The object was reported visible for about one hour.
The witness described an object the size of a baseball, the size of the evening star, fire-red in color with a tail of fire. It first appeared high in the sky, then moved down to treetop level and back up, and moved from side to side. It disappeared while the observer's head was turned. It made no sound. The sky was clear.
The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the small size and behavior pointed to an astronomical body, with apparent rising caused by refraction as the body set. It noted the stars Vega and Deneb were in the area of the first sighting. The case was evaluated as astronomical.
