Summary

On September 4, 1956, in Plymouth, New Hampshire, a civilian reported observing one bright red round object about the size of a grapefruit at arm's length in the sky. The object was observed directly overhead moving from side to side several feet. It moved due east and winked out and reappeared several times. The witness watched the object for one hour and thirty-five minutes and it remained visible in approximately the same location. According to the Air Force investigation, the sighting was caused by Mars, which was at 25 degrees elevation at 110 degrees azimuth at the time of report. The evaluation listed the conclusion as astronomical.
