Summary
On March 23, 1957, civilian and military witnesses at Pasadena, California, reported a single object at night. The Ground Observer Corps was on duty during the sighting. The case was logged under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The object was round and bright red and looked about the size of a grapefruit at arm's length, with white flashes shooting out.
The object was estimated at four to five thousand feet altitude. It moved on a westerly course and disappeared in the west after about 14 minutes. Between 50 and 75 people reported the sighting to the Pasadena police. A light plane was seen passing under the object. The sky was clear with winds calm.
The Air Force agreed with the reporting officer and concluded the sighting was probably caused by the exhaust glow of a passing aircraft. The evaluation given was probably aircraft.
