Summary
On May 28, 1962, two civilian witnesses about six miles west of Palmer, Alaska, reported two objects at about 0440Z. The objects were in sight for about 2 to 4 seconds.
The objects were described as triangular, like miniature planes or small bombs with swept wings. They were about 3 to 5 feet long and 18 inches to 3 feet wide, and gray to brown-black in color. They made a whooshing sound. They flew from east to west in a straight line, three to four feet apart, weaving a little. They dipped over a lake, then climbed back up at about a 20 degree angle and appeared to make rapid half rolls before passing behind trees. The weather was overcast with a light breeze.
This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. Air defense and FAA checks found no known air activity in the area. Officials raised the possibility of birds or remote-controlled model aircraft but found no model club activity. The Air Force classed the case as unidentified, while noting it must be assumed native Alaskans are familiar with local birds, and stated there was no evidence the objects were interplanetary or a threat to security.
