Project Blue Book Case File
Over Utica N.Y., November 1959November 1959
Summary
On the night of November 3, 1959, military pilots in a T-33 jet over Utica, New York, saw an object for 10 to 15 minutes. The aircraft was at 30,000 feet.
The object was round and yellow-white, the size of a pinhead at arm's length, and looked like a spotlight. It seemed stationary until the pilots tried to close in, at which point it sped rapidly away. It disappeared suddenly, then reappeared much dimmer before disappearing again. There was no sound. The flight was on top of a solid overcast under a bright moon.
The Air Force noted the object could have been a balloon, but because the direction of movement was not reported, no valid conclusion could be reached. The card lists the case as insufficient data. This was part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
