Summary

On October 9, 1954, an observer at Olmsted Air Force Base in Pennsylvania watched a white, transparent object move across the sky for about 30 minutes. The object appeared to have a string hanging from its bottom. The observer was stationed at the control tower and saw the object in daylight, in a clear sky with scattered clouds.

The object moved slowly and steadily across the sky before disappearing as darkness fell. The observer estimated the object was about 20 nautical miles away and noted that it resembled a balloon reflecting sunlight. Based on the witness account, the Air Force concluded the object was probably a balloon. The case file indicates that film and video evidence were received.
