Project Blue Book Case File
OGDEN DUNES IND, July 1952 - Incident Number: [ILLEGIBLE]July 1952
Summary
In mid-July 1952, two incidents involving unidentified flying objects were reported in the Ogden Dunes area of Indiana. On July 16 at approximately 2200 hours (10 p.m.), a civilian observer at the lakefront near East Chicago, Indiana noticed a large orange-colored light moving very fast from west to east across Lake Michigan. The object appeared to be about 2000 feet high and traveled in a straight line, unlike a meteor, before disappearing suddenly over the horizon. About one minute later, a second identical object appeared and vanished in the same manner, following the same straight path.
The incident was reported to the Fifth Army Headquarters in Chicago on July 17, 1952. Army officials noted that they contemplated no further action. However, the sighting became part of a larger collection of incidents submitted through standard Air Force channels. The case file also includes several unrelated reports from other locations and dates, including sightings in San Antonio, Texas; Devine, Texas; Hampton, Virginia; and international reports from Spain and French Morocco during the same period.
The Indiana sighting itself contained no radar corroboration or additional witness testimony beyond the initial observer. The file does not clearly state the Air Force's final evaluation of this particular incident. The file, held by the National Archives, consists of 26 scanned pages.
