Summary

On February 2, 1962, a military crew aboard the SS American Shipper reported an object in the Atlantic at Ocean Station Delta, about 48 degrees north and 28 degrees west. The sighting was made at about 2145 GMT and lasted about 6 to 7 seconds. It was seen from the ship by the captain and the second officer just after the Echo satellite passed.

The object was extremely bright and had a very long, bright tail. It was visible through a thin layer of strato cumulus clouds. It was first seen about 20 degrees above the horizon, traveling parallel to the horizon and gradually heading downward in a curve. It disappeared at about 5 degrees elevation, traveling through a 90 degree arc of azimuth.

The Air Force record card lists this case as astronomical, a meteor. The card notes the color was not given, but the object was bright and had a long tail, and there was nothing to indicate it was anything other than a meteor.
