Project Blue Book Case File
Needles, CaliforniaSeptember 1952
Summary
On the evening of September 7, 1952, a couple sitting on their front porch in Needles, California noticed a single object moving silently across the night sky from north to south. The husband, whose letter formed the basis of this report, immediately called his wife's attention to the object. According to his account, the object appeared light in color with a dull glow, had a delta wing shape (like a triangular aircraft), and made no sound as it passed overhead.
The observer estimated that the object was at least a mile away, possibly farther. If it was roughly one mile to the east of his position, he calculated it traveled at an altitude of about 2,000 feet above the surrounding terrain at a speed of 100 to 125 miles per hour, with a width of approximately 200 feet. The couple watched for about 15 seconds until trees blocked their view. Weather conditions at the time were clear with unlimited visibility. No moon had yet risen, ruling out moonlight as the source of the glow. The observer felt confident the object was not a large flock of birds, nor a conventional aircraft, since he was familiar with both. He suggested it might have been an atmospheric condition forming a cloud-like shape, though he acknowledged this explanation did not account for the visible glow.
No physical evidence was found. No aircraft were reported in the area at that time, and no official interception or identification action was taken by local military units. The observer's reliability could not be assessed, as contact was made only through a letter and no in-person interview was conducted due to distance. The Air Force ultimately found the case unidentified. The full case file, consisting of 18 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
