Project Blue Book Case File
Naknek, AlaskaJanuary 1961
Summary
On January 10, 1961, at night, two fishermen about one mile north of Naknek, Alaska reported a single circular object about 25 feet in diameter. It glowed orange while hovering and changed to blue with a white rim, flashing when it moved. A whistling sound was heard. The object made an estimated altitude of 50 to 300 feet.
The object headed southeast, then back northwest, then southeast again. It stopped and hovered at various points, then moved steadily to the south. The sighting lasted about 90 minutes. The witnesses said they had seen similar objects over the past five years.
The intelligence officer noted no reported air traffic, no known helicopters, and a weather balloon whose winds aloft did not match. The Air Force listed the case as insufficient data. The card notes the witnesses had time to take a photograph but did not, and that their reliability was considered doubtful.
