Project Blue Book Case File
N. Truro, MassachusettsSeptember 1957
Summary
This file contains two separate UFO sighting reports from September 1957, though the OCR quality makes some details difficult to read with certainty.
The first report comes from North Truro, Massachusetts, on September 29, 1957. A witness observed a yellow flame with a flame tail angling downward toward the horizon at sunset. The sighting lasted one to two seconds. The object disappeared in the same manner as a meteor, with the flame going out. The Air Force investigator who filed the report concluded it was "definitely a meteor."
The second report, dated September 20, 1957, comes from San Antonio, Texas. Lieutenant Albert R. Butler was observing the stars when he spotted a bright red light appearing at approximately 58 degrees above the horizon. The object was roughly the size of a pencil eraser and displayed red, yellow, white, and blue colors. Over two to three minutes, the object made tight turns at high speeds, hovered in one spot while changing colors, then took off rapidly before fading gradually along the horizon. The reporting officer described it as "descriptive a/c sighting," suggesting the object resembled an aircraft. Radar operators noted nothing unusual on their screens during the observation.
The OCR text of these pages is incomplete and somewhat difficult to read in places, which limits the detail available about the investigation and any final conclusions beyond what appears on the summary cards. The full case file, spanning seven pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
