Project Blue Book Case File
Keck, KentuckyDecember 1951
Summary
On the night of December 19, 1951, observers in Keck, Kentucky reported watching an unusual light in the sky over a period of more than three hours. The file indicates the main object was described as being roughly the size of a beacon light about a mile away. The object appeared to diminish in size and moved in an erratic pattern. According to the witnesses, five smaller objects seemed to follow the path of the first one. The sky was dark and clear, and all the stars were visible that night, which made these objects stand out. A total of nine people witnessed the sighting until 9 p.m., and the observer filing the report and his husband continued watching until 10 p.m.
The Air Force concluded this sighting was most likely Jupiter, the planet. The case file notes that Jupiter was overhead at sixty degrees elevation and was in the western part of the sky about four hours later. The file states that the object's characteristics were consistent with an astronomical body, though the exact meaning of this judgment is somewhat unclear in the OCR text.
The case appears to be relatively brief in its substantive investigation content. Beyond the initial sighting report and the evaluator's astronomical conclusion, detailed analysis or follow-up investigation records are sparse or illegible in the scanned pages provided.
The full case file, comprising 24 pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
