Summary

On September 6, 1962, an 11-year-old girl in Kansas City, Missouri, reported objects in the night sky. The time was about 0345Z, with a second object seen about an hour later near 0442Z. The first object was in sight about 3 to 4 minutes and the second about 5 to 7 minutes.

The witness described round objects, about the size of a basketball, that appeared to be on fire. The flames went from yellow-orange to white and back, then turned very bright and went out. The objects followed a path from southwest to northeast with no clear maneuvers. The girl reported the first object to her mother, who saw the second. The sky was cloudy then clearing.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The card was also marked as a Moon Dust report, which covered possible space debris. The Air Force said the description matched a jet aircraft with afterburner and noted the duration was consistent with that. The description was also said to suggest burning natural or man-made space debris.
