Summary

On August 13, 1951, at 1900 (7:00 p.m.) Central Standard Time, an object was seen over Indianapolis, Indiana. Both military and civilian witnesses observed it. The object was visible overhead and moved in a westerly direction. Its altitude was estimated at about 30,000 feet, and it appeared silver in color.

Air Force messages noted the object appeared to be a plastic balloon. A balloon project center reported that it had tracked a balloon over Indianapolis at the time of the sighting. The high altitude balloon had been released from an Air Force base in the area. The Air Force identified the case as a research balloon.
