HILLCREST HEIGHTS, MD., October 1952October 1952
Summary
On October 12, 1952, about 10:00 p.m. Eastern time, two Air Force majors driving east on Colbrook Drive in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, reported one unidentified object. One was a pilot, and both were attached to the Air Base Group at Andrews Air Force Base. The object was about the size and brightness of a medium star, seen to the east.
The object was first seen at about 44 degrees altitude, traveling from right to left in level flight, then it hovered briefly and began to ascend, disappearing at about 85 degrees. Both men were sure it was not an aircraft or a falling star. They watched it for about 35 to 40 seconds.
Radar at Andrews Air Force Base and at Washington National was negative. A radar operator reported that the Silver Hill, Maryland weather station releases a radiosonde balloon at 10:00 p.m. daily. Weather was clear with no temperature inversion. The Project 10073 worksheet notes the hovering, ascending white light matched normal balloon behavior. The estimate on the record card is probably weather balloon.
