Project Blue Book Case File
Hague, New YorkAugust 1962
Summary
On August 2, 1962, at 10:35 p.m., a resident of Hague, New York spotted two flying objects directly overhead. The observer watched them move from southwest to northeast across the sky in about three and a half minutes before they disappeared over the horizon. The objects made no sound. The observer compared them to stars and said they moved like satellites, though the witness had seen actual satellites before and believed these were different.
The observer initially thought the objects might be aircraft or even Soviet satellites, and wrote to NASA asking for an identification. The Air Force then sent a detailed technical questionnaire to gather more information. In the completed form, the observer said the two objects appeared star-like and moved smoothly across the sky with no special phenomena other than the air. The witness noted the objects had no sound and disappeared star-like, and added that while the movement resembled satellites, the duration was too short for actual satellites and the flight characteristics were normal for aircraft.
The Air Force's initial summary noted that no satellites were visible to the naked eye at that time under normal conditions, and that Echo (a satellite that had been visible earlier that evening) was far too early to match the sighting. The evaluation concluded the sighting most likely represented aircraft. However, the cover sheet marked the case as "unidentified" rather than confirming the aircraft hypothesis. The case file, which includes this summary data and the witness questionnaire, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 13 pages.
