Summary

On March 23, 1956, military aircrew reported one object near Goose Bay, Labrador. The pilot, co-pilot, and an observer aboard a flight saw it. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The crew first saw the object at their ten o'clock position about four minutes after leveling off at 38,500 feet on a heading of 070 degrees. It approached from the east, appearing 2 to 3 miles to their left and somewhat above. It then passed to their left and moved behind the aircraft. Both pilots watched it for about 60 seconds and estimated its speed at 600 to 680 knots. The object was round and bright blue, trailing heavy yellow-orange fire and sparks. Its overall shape was a teardrop, and it flew level.

The Air Force concluded the case was a jet aircraft. The record said the object looked like the tail fire of a jet flying away and that the duration was too long for a meteor.
