Summary

On September 18, 1962, military personnel near Fort Bragg, North Carolina, reported a bright light during a night exercise. The time was about 0855Z. The light was in sight for about 4 minutes. The main observer was an Air Force pilot, and five other military personnel saw it too.

The witnesses described a bright white hemispherical light, about the size of a penny held at arm's length. It first appeared in the north at about 67 degrees elevation and descended in a parabolic path. As it moved, it appeared to accelerate, and the light became pointed with an elongated tail. It went out at about 30 degrees elevation, as if it had burned up. The sky was clear with high thin clouds.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the description matched a flare dropped from an aircraft during the military exercises.
