Summary

On June 19, 1962, military and civilian observers west of Columbus, Georgia, near Fort Benning, reported a star-like object. It was first seen about 1950 (7:50 p.m.) and viewed for about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

The object was round and silver in color. It was viewed with 7x50 binoculars. There was no apparent motion. The observers included Army aviation personnel at Lawson Field.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force noted the planet Venus was at an azimuth of about 275 degrees and an elevation of about 28 degrees at the hour of the sighting, with a magnitude of about -3.4. Officials concluded the object was probably the planet Venus.
