Summary

On October 12, 1962, an airman at Forbes Air Force Base, Kansas, reported an object at dawn. The time was about 1100Z to 1128Z. The object was in sight for about 5 minutes.

The airman described an object like a very bright meteor, but orange to yellow in color, leaving a trail and making no sound. It was about as bright as an airplane at 30,000 feet. It appeared from behind a nearby building, moving quickly at first and slowing as it reached the zenith. It followed a curved path, jerking slightly at times, and faded out at about 20 degrees above the horizon. The observer noted that two or three meteoroids had already been seen. Cloud cover was scattered.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The preparing officer suggested the object was probably an unusually bright meteor. The card itself evaluated the sighting as an aircraft, noting the duration, speed, and appearance were consistent with that.
