Summary

On November 5, 1957, many witnesses near Finland, Minnesota, reported an object in the sky. The report came from military radar station personnel and a civilian. The sighting was a ground visual observation that lasted several hours.

Witnesses described the object as ranging from round to oval. They said it changed color from bluish white to red. They reported precise elevations, directions, and compass bearings. The object was low above the horizon and moved very slowly along the horizon. One witness compared its disappearance to turning off an electric light. Some witnesses also reported a tail, as if from exhaust. Two aircraft returning from a nearby area were in the air at the time.

This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The intelligence officer noted the object was very bright and visible for long periods over several nights in the same area. The Air Force concluded the object was definitely the planet Venus, which it said was so bright at the time that newspapers and journals had commented on it.
