Summary

On October 22, 1958, in the evening, a crew member on a Norwegian ship reported a fast-moving object over the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was sailing from Norway toward Brazil. The report reached U.S. authorities through a telegram from a steamship company.

The object was luminous and traveled at terrific speed, heading north. It was the size of the full moon but with a stronger light. It was about 10 degrees above the horizon. Now and then it flared up for a moment, perhaps when passing small clouds. When it disappeared behind a large cloud, the cloud flared. It was visible for about 5 seconds.

The Air Force concluded the object was astronomical. The record states it was probably a meteor that had penetrated the earth's atmosphere, showing all the characteristics of one.
