CS 4859 (Mil Grid, Korea), December 1953December 1953
Summary
On December 26, 1953, at about 3:25 p.m. in a military grid area over Korea, a pilot reported one object. The sighting was made from a T-6 aircraft on a flight at about 3,500 feet. The pilot saw the object cross his course about three miles away. At first he thought the sun was reflecting off a fighter. The sighting lasted about four minutes.
The object was diamond or kite shaped with one short end, about six feet long and 15 inches thick. It was orange and appeared translucent, at least on its outer edge. It was first in a shallow dive at a speed like a fighter, then increased to an estimated 1,000 miles per hour. The pilot turned to pursue. The object turned inside his circle, then went straight up several hundred feet. As the pilot tried to close, the object headed toward the sun at about 140 miles per hour and was lost from sight. The pilot also saw what looked like sparks behind it.
The weather was a thin overcast with 15 miles visibility in haze. The Air Force record does not give a stated conclusion. It notes that investigation continued and a follow-up report would be sent.
