Summary

On May 13, 1954, at about 3:00 a.m. near Cleveland, Ohio, ground observers and a pilot of the 71st Fighter-Interceptor Squadron reported one object. It showed an orange light that alternated to a red glow. An F-86 was scrambled and chased the object, which appeared and disappeared three times. The jet, flying near Mach 0.82, could not gain on the object, which stayed ahead on a heading of about 310 degrees. The sky was clear with very good visibility. No radar contact was made by the aircraft or ground. Air Force analysts found the planet Jupiter at about 300 degrees and 10 degrees elevation, in the object's position. The conclusion was astronomical, Jupiter.
