Project Blue Book Case File
Cleveland, OhioAugust 1961
Summary
On August 14, 1961, residents of Cleveland, Ohio reported seeing unidentified objects moving rapidly across the sky near the sun. Multiple callers jammed telephone lines at local news outlets between 4:00 p.m. and 4:40 p.m. The sightings sparked an Air Force investigation that ultimately concluded the objects were balloons.
According to witness accounts, the objects traveled in a straight line from northwest to southeast, moving two to three times faster than the Echo I satellite. The witnesses observed them within 5 degrees of the sun, making them visible only when the sun was blocked from direct view. The objects were roughly one-half to one-third as bright as the Echo I satellite but much brighter than the brightest stars. Multiple observers reported the same general phenomena, noting that all objects disappeared at approximately the same distance from the sun.
The Air Force contacted Dr. at the SOHIO Research Laboratory Tracking Station, whose team tracked orbiting satellites. Dr. suggested the objects might be seed pods caught in the jet stream, explaining that the rough, irregular skin of seed pods would reflect sunlight in ways that matched the observations. When pressed for a more formal assessment, Dr. stated that the objects had been determined to be balloons. The case file includes handwritten witness questionnaires providing additional details of the sighting, though some portions are difficult to read in the OCR text.
Two separate sightings in Dayton, Ohio on the same date, recorded on another Project Blue Book form in this file, describe similar phenomena observed by other witnesses in the region.
