Project Blue Book Case File

Summary
On the night of July 19-20, 1959, a woman driving south on Highway 77 near Ceresco, Nebraska saw a strange light in the sky that she described as looking like a bright star with rays of light shooting out from its sides. The sighting lasted between 15 and 20 minutes. The object remained still at first, then made an abrupt turn and traveled west, then north, passing over her car before heading southwest and fading away.
The Air Force investigator who filed the report noted that the observer was reliable but lacked the background to determine what she had actually seen. The investigators later learned that the initial sighting had prompted a newspaper story, which in turn sparked calls from other witnesses. One couple reported seeing a similar object follow their vehicle, changing direction several times. A man from Omaha with a strong background in astronomy reported observing an object that moved far faster than typical aircraft, accelerating to speeds greater than a B-52 bomber. Several other observers with telescopes and astronomical knowledge also called in reports, describing a round, bright object that seemed to move with precise, calculated motions unlike any natural celestial phenomenon they knew.
The Air Force checked all known aircraft in the area. A T-33 jet and a National Guard L-19 were operating nearby, but investigator Captain Lorenzo H. Herring Jr. concluded that neither aircraft matched the observed behavior or characteristics. The L-19 had a red rotating beacon that should have been obvious to the witnesses. Observers using telescopes reported seeing details that did not match any aircraft. Herring also ruled out sun reflection off any aircraft. After reviewing weather data, airfield operations, and FAA traffic records for the region, the investigating officer wrote: "No positive conclusion can be made by the reporting officer as to what the observers may have seen."
The Air Force's final evaluation of the case, as recorded on the Project Blue Book card, lists it as "unknown." The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives and includes 15 pages of investigation records.
