Summary

On August 1, 1952, a bright red object with a trailing tail of fire streaked across the sky near Clear Lake, California. An observer stationed at a Ground Observer Corps post reported seeing the object at 2032 (8:32 p.m.) Pacific Daylight Time. The witness described it as traveling northward at an altitude of roughly 10,000 feet. The tail of fire extended approximately one mile behind the object.

The object appeared only briefly before vanishing from view. Weather conditions in the area were clear, with visibility of twenty-five miles. Wind speeds at 10,000 feet were measured at 190 degrees, moving at 9 knots. An F-86 fighter jet that was airborne in the region was vectored to the object's location by air defense radar, but the pilot saw nothing when he arrived at the area.

The Air Force investigated whether aircraft or meteorological activity could explain the sighting. A check of aviation records revealed no planes in the vicinity at the time of the observation. The intelligence officer who prepared the report noted that no information was available to determine the identity of the sighted object.
