Project Blue Book Case File
Claremont, New HampshireJune 1960
Summary
On the night of June 27, 1960, a woman in Claremont, New Hampshire, watched an unusual object move across the sky. The object appeared reddish to orange in color and had an oblong to round shape. She first spotted it in the southeast and watched it travel to the northeast before losing sight of it in the north-northeast direction. The entire sighting lasted about two to three minutes, and the object moved at roughly the speed of a plane.
The woman filled out a detailed Air Force questionnaire about her observation, providing sketches and answering questions about the object's brightness, movement, and appearance. She noted that the object did not change direction, made no sound, and left no trail. She also reported that it disappeared and reappeared before finally vanishing behind a cloud.
However, the Air Force report noted a significant problem with the case. The sighting occurred on June 27, 1960, but the witness did not file her report until several weeks later, in early July. According to the Air Force evaluation, the delay meant that "the info as originally reported is inaccurate," and investigators decided not to pursue additional information from the witness. The case was assigned the evaluation "insufficient data for evaluation." The Air Force forwarded the report to the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio but made no official conclusion about what the object might have been.
