Summary

On March 10, 1951, near Chinnampo, Korea, the crew of a B-29 aircraft reported a strange flash at about 0051 (12:51 a.m.). The crew was at 16,000 feet on a heading of 030 degrees. The object was first sighted about 42 miles southwest of Chinnampo.

Crew members described a brilliant flash of various colors that looked like a heavy flak burst but was different from any flak they had seen before. It first appeared as a reddish-yellow glow, dropped slightly, then burst with bluish-white brilliance. The flash lasted about one second. The crew stressed that the object did not curve, while artillery fired at aircraft always appears to curve. No sound or concussion was felt.

The crew also reported seeing several falling flares at other times during the flight. The Air Force recorded the case in Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports. The conclusion was unidentified, with insufficient data to firmly identify the object as a meteor or any other known phenomenon.
