Summary

On January 30, 1963, a 12 year old civilian in Chicago, Illinois, reported a black rectangular object with a bright light in front of it. The object was about the size of a basketball in apparent size. The witness was about 6 miles southeast of Midway Airport. The sighting lasted about 30 seconds.

The object first appeared high in the sky, then maneuvered. It seemed to disappear and reappear, flew level, and turned to the southwest, where it faded out at about 30 degrees above the horizon. It made no sound and seemed highly maneuverable. Visibility was about 7 miles in light snow.

The Air Force, in its Project 10073 record, said weather conditions pointed to a possible aircraft with a landing light. It concluded the maneuvers, flight, and duration matched an aircraft and evaluated the case as aircraft.
