Summary

On July 1, 1950, around 1:09 a.m., a man in or near Chicago, Illinois, reported a bright object in the sky. The witness was a civilian doctor. He said the object flew from north to south very fast.

The doctor described it as round, intensely bright, and soundless, like a ball of fire. It crossed from one horizon to the other in about two seconds. He said it was at a high altitude and traveled a level, horizontal course over the West Chicago area. He insisted it was not a meteor and said he knew what meteors looked like.

The Army forwarded the report, and no further investigation was planned at that level. The Air Force record card reviewed the description and the few degrees of sky the object crossed in two seconds. The Air Force conclusion lists the case as astronomical, a meteor.
