Summary

On March 25, 1963, at about 10:12 p.m. local time, a civilian in Chevy Chase, Maryland, reported a bright object after watching the Echo satellite pass. The object was seen at about 40 to 50 degrees above the horizon, moving from east to west. Several bright red objects trailed behind it. The sighting lasted about 3 seconds.

The witness gave the Air Force a detailed description of nine objects. An officer discussed the event with the witness and concluded the object was a bolide that exploded into nine pieces.

The case file includes a detailed scientific study of the same fireball, which was seen across several Mid-Atlantic states. The Air Force, in its Project 10073 record, evaluated the case as astronomical, a meteor.
