Summary
On December 6, 1958, on a clear moonlit night, a civilian guard at the Anniston Ordnance Depot in Bynum, Alabama, reported an oval object. The report reached the Air Force after several days, so it was forwarded without personal interviews.
The object was oval, about 6 to 8 feet in diameter and about 4 feet high. Its color could not be told, but it was visible from reflected moonlight. The witness saw it at about 75 feet altitude moving at 10 to 15 miles per hour. He followed it in his car, lights off, for about a quarter mile. The object teetered from side to side, then stopped and hovered over a warehouse for a few seconds. It then left at a terrific rate of speed to the northeast. The report states there were no exhaust pipes, propellers, or noise.
The weather was clear with no inversion. The Air Force concluded the object was a balloon, stating the description was characteristic of one.
