Summary

On October 2, 1962, an observer on the hills above Christiansted reported a sighting near Buck Island in the Virgin Islands. The report came by phone to a flight service station. The time was about 2227Z. The object was in sight for about 3 seconds.

The witness saw a white streak enter the atmosphere at about a 45 degree angle, about 10 degrees above the horizon, beyond Buck Island. The observer said it was not a flare. The color stayed white during the entire sighting.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the short duration indicated a meteor sighting. The apparent speed ruled out a flare, and the white color and short duration ruled out decay. The Air Force concluded the object was a meteor.
