Project Blue Book Case File
Atlantic Ocean 380 Mi E Of Langley AFB, Va., October 1959October 1959
Summary
On the night of October 21, 1959, a Navy seaman aboard a picket ship in the Atlantic Ocean, about 380 miles east of Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, saw a light. The man was on the flying bridge taking observations.
The object was a tear-shaped, bluish-white light with vapors following it. It moved from east to west and seemed to follow the curve of the earth, but instead of going past the horizon it looked as if it burned out. The light lasted about 10 seconds. The night had broken clouds with good visibility.
Radar showed no trace or contact at that time. The report found no correlation between the sighting and any known object. The Air Force concluded the description was similar to a meteor at high altitude. The card lists the case as astronomical, a meteor. This was part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
