Summary

On January 30, 1951, near Albany, New York, two F-86 jet pilots reported a strange object while flying in close formation at 26,000 feet. The sighting happened at about 1930 (7:30 p.m.). The flight leader and his wingman both saw a green flare descending at a steep angle, passing about 100 to 200 yards off their left wing.

The pilots said the object looked like a flare fired from a Very pistol. They believed it burned out at about 25,000 feet. No other aircraft were seen nearby. Both men agreed on what they saw and felt sure it was not a reflection on the canopy.

A later note pointed out that a danger area north of Amsterdam, New York, could have been the source of a projectile. The Air Force recorded the case in Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports. The conclusion was insufficient data for evaluation.
