Summary

On February 27, 1962, military personnel aboard a Hawaiian merchant ship near the equator in the Pacific reported one bright object high in the sky. They observed it through a sextant for about 3 minutes. The object was first seen at an altitude of about 59 degrees and moved to about 35 degrees elevation before the final reading. The Air Force compared the position with the known track of the Echo I satellite and found it was visible from that location and consistent with the satellite. The record card concluded the sighting was Echo I.
