Summary

On April 11, 1958, about 60 miles west of Argentia, Newfoundland, a military aircraft crew reported a bright object in the sky. The cockpit of their C-124 aircraft was lit up for 15 to 20 seconds by a white light described as intense as an arc welding torch. The aircraft was at 8,000 feet. During the last 5 seconds, a round white object the size of a baseball held at arm's length was seen traveling at great speed from low in the sky to directly overhead, where it broke up in a shower of red sparks. No tail or trail was seen. The pilot, with 15 years of experience, said it was not a comet or falling star. Radar sites in the area found no confirmation. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force evaluated the case as a meteor.
