Project Blue Book Case File
60.14N 13.36W (Atlantic), October 1962October 1962
Summary
On October 23, 1962, the crew of an aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean, near 60.14N and a longitude later corrected to 13.36W, reported a bright light. The report came from military aircrew and was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports.
The object was a single round white light, about as bright as a first magnitude star. It was seen moving against the background stars. Reports gave its path as rising through the sky over about 18 minutes before it passed behind the aircraft. The night was clear with unlimited visibility and no clouds. No radar contact and no physical evidence were obtained.
The Air Force said the object had the characteristics of an orbiting body and evaluated the case as a satellite. A later analysis noted that no satellite of suitable size and orbit was known to be in the area at that time, and data for the Echo satellite was not available.
