On April 3, 1962, a civilian merchant ship in the Atlantic (about 40-90N 46-48W) reported one bright object. The object was brighter than a first magnitude star and was visible for about 6 minutes at extremely high altitude and speed, roughly 1,000 miles per hour. The Air Force noted the object had the characteristics of a satellite and an apparent orbital flight and direction. The record card concluded the sighting was a satellite.
