4 Mi W Of Greenbush, KansasMay 1959
Summary
On May 18, 1959, at about 0830Z, about 4 miles west of Greenbush, Kansas, a driver reported a close encounter with a glowing object. The sighting was reported through the Air Force's unidentified flying object record system.
The observer was driving west on Kansas Highway 57 at about 75 to 80 miles per hour when he saw a single ball-shaped object. It was orange turning to red and looked hot and bubbling, like a quarter of a low moon. The object was as wide as the two-lane road, about 30 feet. It traveled due west at treetop level, then stopped in the air about 25 yards in front of the car and descended straight to the ground.
The object stayed three or four minutes, changing from orange to red, then rose straight up to about ten to fifteen feet. It headed northwest, turned southwest at about 30 feet, and disappeared instantly. There was no sound. The card listed the course as unknown and noted insufficient data for evaluation.
