Summary

On January 31, 1962, a military crew reported a possible satellite in the Pacific at about 34 degrees north and 176 degrees west. The sighting was made at about 0638 GMT on February 1. It was seen by eye. The length of observation was not given.

The object was round and the size of a pinhead. It was 42 degrees above the horizon and heading from west to east. Its speed was unknown.

The Air Force record card lists this case as a satellite. The card notes the Echo satellite was in the area, so Echo could not be ruled out, but the easterly heading was more typical of a satellite with an orbital inclination nearer 30 degrees. The case was evaluated as a satellite.
