Summary

On January 8, 1962, a Navy aircraft crew reported an object in the Pacific at about 33 degrees north and 176 degrees west. The sighting was made at about 1540 GMT. It was seen by eye.

The object had the size and brilliance of a bright planet. There was one object and it was heading from southwest to northeast. It disappeared over the horizon. The crew estimated its velocity at about twice the speed of the Echo satellite.

The Air Force record card lists this case as a satellite. The card notes the object was not Echo, because Echo had passed the pole and was at a different position at the time. However, the object had the characteristics of an orbital path, so it was listed as a satellite.
