Summary

On March 17, 1962, military personnel aboard the USS Estes in the Pacific northeast of Hawaii reported one object during nautical twilight. The witnesses included the commanding officer and executive officer. The object was a light blue ball of flame, about the size of a dime at arm's length, with a blazing trail about five times its length. It was seen on a southerly bearing moving west to east through about 20 degrees of arc at about 30 degrees elevation. The sighting lasted about 2 seconds, and the flame burned out about 25 degrees above the horizon. No sound was heard. The witnesses noted the almost horizontal path, the brightness of the flame, and the nearness of the object. The Air Force record card concluded the sighting was a meteor.
