On January 14, 1962, a military crew aboard the USCGC Winnebago reported a possible satellite in the Pacific at about 31 degrees north and 171 degrees east. The sighting was made at about 1851 GMT. It was seen by eye. The length of observation was not given.
The object was at a very high altitude. It traveled from a direction of 300 degrees true toward 150 degrees true. There was one object, heading northeast. Its speed was unknown.
The Air Force record card lists this case as a satellite. The card notes the Echo satellite was on a southeast orbital flight at the time, so this object was probably one of the other satellites visible to the naked eye.
