Summary

On July 29, 1962, the first officer of the Norwegian ship M.S. Ferngate reported a sighting over the North Atlantic Ocean. The time was 2117Z and the position was about 31 degrees 06 minutes north and 32 degrees 18 minutes east. The observation lasted about 7 minutes. The weather was clear.

The officer saw a bright star-like object near the star Regulus. It moved eastward toward the star Vega and then down toward the horizon. He described it as looking like a satellite or a bright star.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the object's flight and duration matched a satellite, and the case was considered a sighting of a satellite. Tracking data for a known satellite was not available.
