Summary
On May 1, 1962, a staff watch officer aboard a Navy vessel in the Pacific reported an object in the sky. The sighting was at about 0525Z and lasted about 25 minutes.
The object was described as red, white, and blue and larger than a first magnitude star or planet. It was first seen at about 280 degrees azimuth and 19 degrees elevation. It moved from north to south and disappeared behind clouds at about 250 degrees azimuth and 14 degrees elevation. It was viewed through a 20 power glass. The weather gave a ceiling of about 2,000 feet with 10 mile visibility and 6/10 cloud cover.
This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the object was in sight too long for a satellite and too long for an aircraft. No information was given on flight path or changes in speed and direction. Officials concluded there was insufficient data for a valid analysis.
